When Melissa and Candice met 23 years ago through Big Brothers Big Sisters, two lives were forever changed. Attached is a story celebrating impact and the spirit of Big Brothers Big Sisters – transformative change.
The connection wasn’t easy between Little Melissa and Big Candice when they first met. Having been let down in the past, Melissa was resistant to the mentoring relationship. With some encouragement from her mom, Melissa continued with the program.
Candice continued to show up. That winter, an afternoon spent tobogganing became the moment everything changed. Trust began to grow and walls came down. What started as a hesitant match became a lasting sisterhood built on trust, consistency, encouragement and care.
Through childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood, Candice remained someone Melissa could count on – proving that unconditional support truly exists. Though their match officially ended with Big Brothers Big Sisters when Melissa turned 18, she and Candice have become lifelong friends.
Today, Melissa is a confident, resilient young woman, and a role model for the next generation as she works in law enforcement.
