Spotlighting Jamie
Of all things that mentoring is, it’s most rewarding, says Jamie, volunteer mentor of 27 years. “I get as much out of the match as they do.”
Jamie originally got involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters to show up for a young person who needed it just as he did when he was young. “While my father was not there for me as a young child, my mom remarried to a great man who became my mentor – the guy I looked up to, someone who taught me life lessons and helped me become the man I am today. He was just like a Big Brother to me. I wanted to be a positive role model for a child just as he helped me.”
In his 27 years as a volunteer, Jamie has been a Big Brother to five mentees. One of his first Little Brothers, now an adult, got married recently and Jamie was there to celebrate the occasion. The two have kept in touch since their match aged out through the agency.
“It is so rewarding to mentor a young child and watch them grow up to be kind, caring and loving adults,” says Jamie. “It is also great to help them through life’s challenges and successes.”
Koen is Jamie’s most recent Little Brother. For seven years, Jamie has been a mentor to Koen as he’s grown and developed during his formative years. With countless adventures shared, the two are always up to something fun -and usually outdoors- when they’re together. Jamie has introduced some of his hobbies to Koen, like fishing, and this is now something they enjoy together each summer.
“Being there for all of the big moments in their life” is Jamie’s favourite part. “Koen just graduated Grade 8, he was the valedictorian and got honours in three classes. I’m so proud of him!”
Going above and beyond being a mentor, Jamie has supported Big Brothers Big Sisters in many ways over the years, helping to share his story to promote impact and recruitment initiatives.
