The Big Brothers Big Sisters Board of Directors is seeking members to commit their time to join our dedicated group.

The Opportunity

Big Brothers Big Sisters, Serving Grand Erie, Halton and Hamilton (BBBSGEHH) is seeking strategic and inspiring volunteer board members to help lead an organization that is making a powerful impact on youth in Halton, Hamilton, and Grand Erie. Recently celebrating 100-years in the region, this is an exciting time to join us to strengthen and further develop programming for youth in the region.

Our Board of Directors are passionate about defending the potential and systems disruption with young people in Grand Erie, Halton and Hamilton communities. Our Board culture promotes transparency, innovation, collaboration, accountability, inclusion and belonging.

We invite those with lived experiences of oppression (include ability, newcomer, BIPOC, and other types of diverse lenses) to join our team to support our journey.

We strive to recruit a Board that reflects the diverse communities that we serve. People from diverse backgrounds including Black and other racialized groups, Indigenous peoples and those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ are strongly encouraged to apply.

For 2025-26, we are particularly looking for nominees with the following background/areas of expertise:

  • Small Business Owners
  • Technology
  • Healthcare
  • Community Service
  • Fundraising and Philanthropy

In an effort to balance our board with representation from all the communities we serve, ideally nominees reside in Burlington or Brantford.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Assume a leadership role as required (such as chair of a committee)
  • Establish policies that guide the organization in achieving its mandate
  • Contribute to the process of establishing strategic direction for the agency
  • Employ the Executive Director and approve their employment contract
  • Support and participate in evaluating the Executive Director annually
  • Ensure fiscal stability and financial accountability
  • Attend and be prepared for Board and other meetings as required
  • Actively contribute to the functioning of the Board and its sub-committees
  • Be informed about agency programs and policies
  • Participate in the evaluation process established by the Board
  • Ensure that the agency adheres to the National Standards as set out by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada
  • Review the Board’s structure, approve changes and prepare necessary bylaw amendments
  • Approve agency budget
  • Assist in developing and maintaining positive relations among the Board, committees, staff and community to enhance the agency mission
  • Assist in the recruitment of new Board members
  • Ensure that the agency adheres to all federal and provincial privacy legislation
